For the first time ever urban cities from around the globe have been incorporated into fashion design. Azin Valy, I-Beam Design co-founder (an architecture firm in Manhattan), is the designer behind this new fashion. Now this may not sound like something new, however your new silk dress will “map” it out for you!
Azin’s Cityzen collection features scarves, bags and dresses printed with aerial maps of cities including: Chicago, New York and Tehran. This was done with a little help from Satellite map, displaying a more accurate recreation for the line.
“I spent weeks recreating them, abstracting them and colorizing them,” says Azin.
For her Chicago scarf she had incorporated the map in Gustav Klimt colors, with a golden background, a black Lake Michigan on the east corner of the scarf and deep sienna patches of farmland on the southern outskirts of the city itself. The collection features 12 silk scarves that range in price, from $250 to $350.
Azin had come with the idea of using cities in fashion when she was doing research for an urban design show called FORECLOSED: Rehousing the American Dream, which was held at the Museum of Modern Art in 2012. As she was looking through the aerial views of Texas, Nevada and Florida, and see street grids to mountains, rivers and lakes she had revolution in fashion.
“These cities are so beautiful,” thought Azin. “Why hasn’t anyone used them in fashion?”
Thus, leading her to make her an out of this world collection, which is available exclusively for purchase through cityzenbyazin.com.
