Once upon a time in a land far, far away, there lived a strange race of humans who relied on their daily newspaper subscriptions to provide them with their regular dose of news.
They’d rise at dawn, anxiously awaiting the delivery. Once they’d read the paper back to front, they’d brush off their shoulders and go about their daily routines. There was no better way to show off their newly acquired knowledge than to chat with a friend over coffee, or call their loved ones to discuss local politics. To think that people would actually use the key pad on their phone not for texting, but for dialing numbers, and, god forbid, have to open their mouths to get their message across is unbelievable in today’s linked in world.
Slowly but surely we have been taken over by a format that allows us to ‘talk’ back without moving our jaw – social media. Twitter in particular has changed our idea of the difference between daily, mundane updates and what is considered newsworthy and a “hot topic”. That leaves us in control of what we want to hear, and better yet, of what we don’t want to hear.
When it comes to fashion, Twitter has been used as a stage for some of the top fashion editors, stylists and artists, but also as a tool for so-called “social media socialites”. You know what I’m talking about – that girl or guy you see at every fashion show and VIP party but don’t quite know what he or she really does for a living. Their fashion sense is on point for the most part, and their confidence makes up for the selections you may disagree with. Most importantly, the tweets are consistent, intriguing and you actually read them. You start trusting them over the tweets and advice of professional stylists.
We care about fashion tweets, arguably more than editorials in magazines, because they come from people we trust. These are our tweeps! We’ve sifted through to find the ones that are our personal best fit. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to come to the conclusion that although fashion carries overall seasonal trends, individuals tend to mix and match trends to suit their own needs. Just like anything in fashion, it is important and refreshing to find exactly what fits you best … a trustworthy fashionista or fashionisto to follow their every move!
