Cher Horowitz’s uniform sweater style has come back into fashion. I had made the conscious effort not to take notice of the growing trend until a coworker came in wearing a grey, cashmere cropped sweater and a white, collared button-up shirt underneath it. It was then that I knew I wouldn’t rest until I too found the perfect cropped top.
Now that I have it (though not the Clueless one my heart still desires) I have to take great pains to wear it correctly. Yes…there are ways to mess up a crop top. Be prepared.
Tone that tummy.
I know, no one is supposed to tell you what to do with your body. And normally I wouldn’t even dare. But trust me when I say, crop tops are unforgiving. They will cut you off at your most sensitive areas (no not that one! Go north!) and will showcase any and every imperfection. You don’t need to look like Gisele, just make sure a muffin top is not an option.
Choose bottoms carefully.
It’s not the 90′s. Low-rise jeans with a cropped shirt isn’t a wise choice. Mainly because you’re not dancing in a bar called Coyote Ugly (hopefully). Pair your short top with something that comes close to its hem. A cute pair of high waisted jean shorts will be the appropriate look this summer. If you’re not into it you can always choose a maxi skirt and cinch it above your belly button with a skinny, colorful belt.The patch of skin above the navel never gets any love…until now!
Pick an interesting top.
You don’t want the only cool factor of your outfit to be that your shirt is a bit short. Be on the lookout for cropped tops that have a little something extra whether it be an off-the-shoulder effect, bedazzlement, a mullet tail or an asymmetrical cut. Don’t just buy a blank white tee, kick it up a notch!
Have some fun.
Style yourself like my fabulous coworker in a layered look. Put your cropped shirt over something lengthy that will turn heads. Here’s a perfect time to color block! Pick a pink short shirt and pair it with a red collared top. Choose a halter black bodysuit and layer it with an off-the-shoulder lace crop top. Let your inner creative out. Think to yourself…what would Cher do?
