When asked if she had a favorite piece from her FW 2012 collection Prabal Gurung answered all 42 looks. And we can’t blame her! This collection which debuted at New York Fashion Week was a play on heaven and hell and dealing with a duality, featuring a combination of edgy dark blues and deep blacks, mixed with ethereal and heavenly golds and whites– the dark side vs the light. Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury for MAC Cosmetics developed a “Birds of Paradise” beauty look based on Gurung’s theme, creating a hypnotic eye which referenced such things as Avatar and scarab beetles.
For the face, Tilbury left skin with an innocent and fresh finish while the eyes remained the main focus of the beauty look. Enter our new obsession of the season: the dramatic, dual tonality peacock effect. Tilbury blended blue and teal shadow all over the lids and through the brows, using MAC’s forthcoming eye shadow palette in Delft. Lower lashes were detailed with cooper brown for rich dimension, as pigments in Blue Brown and Eyeshadow in Fresh Water were smudged for dimension. Backstage Tilbury coached her team referencing the Bird of Paradise saying “I don’t want to see a mess—it’s still beauty.”
