While the West Coast is thousands of miles away from Paris, New York, and London fashion hubs, California-based fashion is not just about costume design and red carpet styling. Rather, the sunny state holds a roster of notable brands, emerging and well-established, that are at the forefront of style. And it seems that the sunny days, beach lifestyle, and casual attitude transfer right onto the clothes, perhaps best in the realm of good old denim design. Here are some favorite labels that truly encompass their Americana roots and a little taste of what they’re up to for fall.
Current/Elliott, created by age-old friends and stylists Emily Current and Merritt Elliot, designs denim-only clothes inspired by vintage finds and the American lifestyle. They’ve got your bases covered for fall with denim biker jackets, plum pencil leg jeans, faded boyfriend cuts and nostalgic flares.
Remember when Proenza Schouler got J-Branded last fall? The collaborative jeans were perfect, reminiscent of a two-toned Jackson Pollock piece. This fall, J Brand’s own creations include some beautiful pencil leg cords in an array of cozy fall colors and, although it may not be demin, who needs black cotton leggings when you could wear their shiny black 901 Leggings?
Last, but in no way the least favorite of the three, is the tried, tested and True Religion, which ran wild this season with a rural Prairie-inspired collection for fall. We’ll say no more – just have a look and their Fall 2011 lookbook and you’ll see what we mean. It features the breathtaking Anne Vyalitsyna – a remarkable beauty and a next-generation Kate Moss gone West.
