In the airport, while on the way to Paris, I was especially drawn to the magazine stands… The new cover of Vogue Italia was so captivating that it almost made me miss my plane!
It’s gotten everyone talking in Milan! Steven Meisel shot a fashion editorial with a focus on the beauty in curvy women called ‘Belle Vere’ (translation: real beauties). Fashion revolution? Almost… We think it’s brilliant! It’s a little racy, and oh-so-sensual! We interpreted it as a photographic ode to the iconic Italian women of the 1950s ie: Sophia Loren.
The three models, Tara Lynn, Canadice Huffine and Robyn Lawley, are shot in what seems like an early 20th century Italian boudoir, dressed in almost burlesque-like lingerie. Miesel’s muses are seen in racy poses representing the female eros in her soft and curvaceous splendor.
Vogue Italia’s editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani explains that the goal of this fashion editorial was to pay tribute to real women, leaving room for ‘the shapely woman to return in all her beauty and splendor.” She emphasizes that, “the splendor of a body with accentuated curves is sexy and captivating.”
This month’s magazine editorial follows an initiative launched by Sozzani earlier this year on Vogue.it. ‘The Curvy blog’, which promotes the idea that women who have curves should be proud of them and live comfortably in their bodies without having to adhere to the idea that beauty is limited to fitting into a size 0.
“With the release of this month’s issue, we wanted to continue transmitting a strong message to all of the women (and there are many out there) who interpret beauty as something much deeper and genuine than a mere dress size”, states Sozzani.
Is curvy back? We think yes—and it’s about time. What do you think?
