One of the hottest lips off the 2010 runways came from the Diane Von Furstenberg Spring 2011 show. Makeup artist James Kaliardos created a beautifully extreme matte lip that popped off the models skin like a 3D image, meant to look like an iconic “Warhol silk-screened lip”. The rest of the makeup was simple and clean using luminous highlights on the higher planes of the face to create the perfect glow.
To achieve this lip you must exfoliate and hydrate! Use a warm washcloth or soft toothbrush to remove any dry skin. Apply lip conditioner—my favorite is Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment, a blend of oils and real sugar that’s good enough to eat!
Begin applying your foundation after prepping the lip to allow extra hydration time. Use an even base of Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer—it has the perfect amount of coverage and glow for creating a perfect canvas to work on. Having worked with James Kaliardos backstage during Fashion Week, he is the master of highlighting the models’ skin using a range of creams and powder based products. NARS Copacabana multi-purpose stick is perfect to add sheen to the cheeks and inner corners of the eye.
Once your lip conditioner has had time to set into the lip, it’s time for the finishing touch. Take a piece of tissue to blot excess moisture and begin filling in your lip with a lip pencil—MAC Magenta is a great colour for this look and will help frame your lip.
You will need 2 MAC brushes to fill in the rest. I like to use eye shadow brushes for applying lip products and always encourage the use of brushes in an unconventional way to spark creativity. Use a #231 bullet brush to apply your lipstick, try MAC Something New, a creamy bright blue pink. Work from the centre of the lip and blend out. To achieve the extreme matte lip, lightly dab Madly Personal Pigment, a bright pink, using a #224 tapered blending brush.
This new pink lip is a work of art! It’s a great transition from the red lip we saw during the winter season and really helps to brighten the skin. Finally, spring is in the air!
