Trying to work out Christopher Kane’s backstage comments about his collection today — Did he say “a royal on crack?” — was a wee difficult. Mr. Kane is a Scot, as well as a chatty personality, and a good ear must be attuned. In fact, he was referring to Princess Margaret’s fashion in her youth, and to the discreet elegance of the royal dressmaker Norman Hartnell. As for those fluorescent shades of green, orange and pink in the collection, “those colors just make your heart race,” Mr. Kane said.
The show’s striking element was laser-cut leather, so supple that it resembled lace. (Or, in its pattern, fancy 1940s linoleum, the designer offered.) Overall, the lines were sedate, with pleated skirts, drop-waist dresses in lace with pleats and piping, and a very effective final group of embroidered lace. The embroidery palette — blues, greens and reds — looked saturated on the neon-bright lace. (Source: NYT)
